S is for Sports

The Athlete

A athlete is a special person
With strength of body and soul.
It takes a lot of inner strength
To retain his outer control.

His mind is sharp and his body strong
His focus never wavers
As he starts for his final goal.
And every moment he savors.

Whether in a practice session
Or in a scheduled meet
Or running countess marathons
He's ready to compete.

We applaud our son the athlete
And admire his courageous, competitive spirit
And in our hearts we cheer him on
And know that within his heart he can hear it!

Scarlett gets a blue ribbon in gymnastics

Scarlett got a blue ribbon
For her gymnastics today!
She walked the balance beam
In the most graceful way!

Scarlett got a prize
For the wonderful rollovers she did
Front and back were both supreme
What a talented kid!

Scarlett's Dad was watching
And each time she smiled toward him
Her daddy took another photo....
He took a whole role of film!

Scarlett's mom was proud as punch
And told her friends on line
Wait until you see these gymnastics
The cutest one is mine!!

And Scarlett went home happy
And returned to her normal day
Got herself some tasty snacks
And watched tv that day!

My Team

I watch my team on the field
And then look to the scoreboard
For the statistics it will reveal.
While the time is almost over
And our team has not much time
If we can just stay in control
Things will work out fine!

Football Season

Love the thrill of it all
The sound of fast flying ball
The roar of the crowds
And the proud hometown fans
Cheering their own
From high in the stands.
I love to watch in person
Or at home on TV
It's the best sport
For folks like me!

Football Blues

Fathers and sons
Gathered in front of the big TV
Doesn't matter to them
If there is something else you want to see.
Don't bug the dad
Don't speak to the son
Not until the football game
Is over and the broadcast done!

Quarterbacks, Tackles, Guards and kickers
All playing their hearts out on the field
You may say that it's only a game
But to the team, it's awfully real.

Kickers, kick the ball and hope for the best
And hope their team is in the right spot
Praying that each player is actively alert
And that not one player gets hurt.

Defensive team member are ready to go
Linebackers, Defensive ends and Defensive backs
Are where they should be and ready to do
The things they must in order to be a winning team for you.

Some watch from the stands with drink in hand
And munch on popcorn that has gotten cold...
Saying that the stress they don't understand
For this is just a game - or so we are told...

S is for Sisters

Not Your Usual Sisters

We were not your usual sisters
That grew up together
Sharing clothes and secrets
In sunshine or rainy weather.

No giggling when the lights went out
About the exploits of the day
Or chatting about boyfriends
Until the daylight was gone away.

There was no daily dose of happiness
Of sharing sisterly things with each other
Or sneaking a peek at the visitors
That hung out with our brother.

Our ages kept us separated more
Than a lot of families around us
But as we grew up and learned more of each other
We found a common tie that bound us.

We each played out the roles
That we were intended to play, you see
As mother figure, as advisor
Or as a counselor when need be.

We came together when we needed something
Or if we were the one who could do the giving
And even if there were tiffs from time to time
There was always the act of forgiving.

As we grieve the loss of our mother
We each feel the need to reach out
To share our feelings of love, grief, gratitude and joy
For that is what sisterhood is all about.
